UNFPA: Supporting Gender Equality in Armenia

What is UNFPA doing ?

UNFPA began its support to Armenia in 1995. Since then it has assisted a wide range of projects on reproductive health, supported capacity building at government level, awareness raising about sexual and reproductive health issues among young people and encouraging partnerships between the government and civil society.
The gender perspective has been a key feature in all of these projects.
With its extensive worldwide experience of gathering data for development, UNFPA also supported the first national census in Armenia.

In its current programme for Armenia, UNFPA plans to focus on three components, each of which incorporates Gender and Advocacy considerations:

  • Population and Development Strategies - UNFPA aims to ensure that future national and regional policies take into consideration the results of the changes in Armenia's population dynamics (low fertility, migration, ageing etc) and their link with poverty and gender issues.
  • Reproductive Health - UNFPA aims to help improve the use of high-quality reproductive health services, particularly by disadvantaged groups and young people. It also aims to ensure that reproductive rights are included in policy frameworks and the educational system.
  • Combating gender-based violence - UNFPA is to contribute to creation of the enabling environment for reduction of gender based violence in Armenia and to support the country in fulfilling its international obligations in the field.
