UNFPA: Supporting Gender Equality in Azerbaijan
What is UNFPA doing? UNFPA has been assisting Azerbaijan since 1994. Its early projects concentrated on meeting emergency reproductive health and population needs. Since then, UNFPA has been supporting a wide variety of activities in Azerbaijan to strengthen national capacity in issues relating to population, and reproductive health with the gender perspective present throughout. UNFPA's current programme for Azerbaijan includes Strengthening the managerial and technical capacity of RH service providers Improving the quality of RH services and commodities by strengthening the health logistics management information system Increasing people's knowledge and skills to adopt responsible and healthy sexual and reproductive behavior. Strengthening the technical capacity of policy and decision makers, NGOs, civil society and media to formulate implement and support legislation for reproductive health and rights Increasing the availability of accurate, gender-sensitive information on population, development and the environment Creating an enabling environment and strengthening national capacity to give population issues a prominent role in development and environment policies. UNFPA's past assistance over the last 10 years has included: Providing medical equipment, contraceptives and training for a network of reproductive health centers. Support in developing a reproductive health law. Enhancing health services for internally displaced people. Ensuring nationwide coverage of the family life education programme. Support for supported national institutions in analyzing and disseminating the results of the first post-independence census. Training state officials on the link between population and development and demographic techniques. Collecting demographic and socio economic data. Helping to establish a legal framework to address gender equalities. Assistance in formulating and starting the implementation of a national reproductive health strategy.
