UNFPA: ASSISTING IN THE COLLECTION OF DATA AS A TOOL FOR DEVELOPMENT

Availability of reliable and accurate population data and its correct analysis are vital for evidence-based and focused national policy formulation, planning and implementation and advancing of sustainable development as such.

Population and Sustainable Development is one of UNFPA’s main areas of focus and activity in Georgia. In its Current agenda for Georgia, UNFPA supports the Government in further strengthening its capacity to gather and analyze population data, by assisting in the General Population Census to be carried out in the country in 2010.

Strengthening MDG Monitoring Systems and Tools
In partnership with the Statistical Department of the Ministry of Economic Development
Implementation period: 2006-2010

Goal: To support the National Statistical Institute in collecting and analyzing accurate data segregated by specific parameters, that would act as population trend indicators and a reliable tool for planning and decision making.

Activities and achievements:
In an important upcoming development, UNFPA will assist the Government of Georgia in conducting the 2010 National Census. As a part of preparatory measures started in 2006, UNFPA supports the capacity building of the National Statistical Departments and its partner agencies to carry out the 2010 National census effectively.
UNFPA provided support to the Department of Statistics by procuring and introducing the Geo-Information System (GIS) to implement the National Action Plan on General Population Census 2010.
In order to upgrade the existing statistical system to an internationally accepted standard, UNFPA will be inviting International experts to overlook the process of capacity building and identify areas for further improvement.
Overall, during 2006-2010, UNFPA will support the country on Population and Development through technical assistance, up gradation of IT infrastructure and research activities for the creation of a reliable database.

Support to Gender and Generations Survey in Georgia
In partnership with the NGO - Georgian Centre for Population Research

UNFPA supported implementation of the European programme - Generations and Gender Survey, named in Georgia “Family Relationships and Intergenerational Support”, which is the first national representative statistical survey devoted to the study of the system of gender relationships in a country and to the problems of gender equity in the family, as well as in the social life of individuals throughout its wide range of topics.

The survey country report available in Georgian and English will improve the understanding of demographic and social development, as well as the factors that influence these developments, and informed policy formulation in this field.
