Since December 2005, the Joint Programme has been busy recruiting staff, starting preliminary activities and raising funds. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in Turkey has been designated as the UN Managing Agent for the Joint UN Programme. The Ministry of the Interior has endorsed the Joint Programme and it has been signed by the Undersecretary. The Ministry of Interior's Center for Research and Studies is taking on responsibility for the Joint Programme. In addition to being the National Counterpart for the whole Joint Programme, the Center will take the lead in implementing activities to raise local government official's awareness about gender equality and improve local services for women and girls. KADER has also endorsed the Joint Programme and signed on as an implementing partner. KADER will be responsible for the training of partner NGOs and will serve as a national liaison to ensure network building and knowledge sharing among local partner NGOs. KADER brings to the project its experience working on gender issues in Turkey, with an emphasis on capacity building, and its reputation as an active leader among women's NGOs in Turkey. Welcome to our Programme Manager, Nevin Şenol! Ms. Şenol comes to the UN Joint Programme with a wealth of experience. Her background is in economics and political science. Ms. Şenol spent 11 years advocating for gender equality at various levels of government, culminating in a position as General Director of the General Directorate for the Status of Women. She also has 16 years of experience managing and implementing internationally funded development projects (OECD, UNDP, WB, UNFPA) and experience participating in UN World Conferences including the Beijing and Beijing +5 Conferences, the World Summit on Social Development, annual meetings of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, the Council of Europe's Steering Committee for Equality between Women and Men and the OECD. Ms. Şenol has extensive knowledge of EU norms for gender equality and has published on the EU's equal opportunity policies. In addition, Ms. Şenol has a deep history of voluntary work with women's NGOs in Turkey. Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Ms. Şenol. We believe that in her capable hands the Joint Programme will be a success and model in Turkey and the world. In December 2005 the Joint Programme began programme
activities with an Opinion Poll in each of the six
cities. Over 3,000 men and women from the six cities
were polled to learn their needs and priorities and
inform them about programme activities. Results from
the Opinion Poll will be available at the end of March
and will direct all future programme activities. |
