Reproductive Health Training for Armed Forces

Project name:  N/A

Budget: 250.000 USD

Timeline:  September 2002-2005

What's the situation?

In Turkey all Turkish males between the ages of 18-45 have an obligatory military duty (6 to 18 months). Every year most of the 500.000 recruits (who are in their early twenties) get married after the completion of their military duty. The armed forces have its own health service network, but counselling on reproductive health is not provided.

What’s our mission?

UNFPA Turkey through increasing male involvement - educating young males during their obligatory military duty in the armed forces, aims to improve reproductive health of both men and women.

How is UNFPA doing this ?

  • By establishing Reproductive Health training centers in 21 military hospitals for training of trainers
  • By forming a cadre of trainers (over 3000) within the armed forces structure
  • By developing special curriculum and information materials which include reproductive anatomy, contraception, safe motherhood, prevention of sexually transmitted infections and HIV/AIDS, gender equality and gender based violence topics
  • By providing training equipment to 600 classrooms in military installations
  • By monitoring the progress through regular follow-up visits

Who are our partners?

Gulhane Military Medical Academy

The Ministry of Health, General Directorate of Mother Child Health and Family Planning

How will Turkey benefit?

Most of the young recruits have almost no information regarding sexual and reproductive health the related issues are not part of the curriculum in formal education. Through this training, by the time they have completed their military duty, all young males will have gained critical information on sexual and reproductive health including how to use a condom correctly, the basic concepts of gender equality and gender based violence. Integrating this training into the formal structure of the Armed Forces will enable institutionalization in the long run.
