Augmenting and Improving Turkey's data sources on Population and Development

Project name / Work plan: TUR/01/P09 - Conducting and Disseminating Priority Research and Studies

Budget: USD 250,000

Timeline: July 2001- December 2005

What's the situation?

Significant gaps have been identified in Turkey's existing data sources on population and development, particularly in the areas of migration, urbanisation, ageing and population dynamics. This type of data is a key element in the formulation of policy both by the Government of Turkey and by non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and important for future programming. It was therefore decided to conduct priority research and studies for a five-year period during the Third Country Programme of UNFPA Turkey, which would contribute to the development of policy suggestions on population and development.

Whats our mission?

As the lead United Nations organization for the follow-up and implementation of the Programme of Action of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development, (ICPD) UNFPA aims to contribute to the amount of necessary information and policy suggestions available in the field of population and development in Turkey. In order to achieve this aim, UNFPA is fully committed to working in partnership with the Government, non-governmental organizations, universities and civil society.

How is UNFPA doing this?

  • In 2001, a Steering Committee, which was responsible for the implementation of the research and studies, was established under the coordination of Turkish Academy of Sciences (TAS).The Steering Committee brought together selected academicians and  representatives of governmental and non-governmental organizations related to population and development issues in Turkey.
  • The Steering Committee has been met regularly to discuss and decide research themes, and to coordinate and follow up the activities.
  • UNFPA has provided technical and financial assistance to TAS for conducting a number studies since 2001.
  • In 2004, the Steering Committee began qualitative research to develop policy suggestions in the field of population and development in Turkey. In this context, focus group discussions were conducted in Ankara and Istanbul, bringing together experts and representatives from the Government, universities, non-governmental organizations and international organizations in order to address eight main sub-topics :

  1. Population and Development
  2. Governance
  3. Social structure
  4. Urbanization
  5. Environment
  6. Demography
  7. Economics
  8. Health and education

  • The results of the focus group discussions conducted in 2004 and activities of 2005 will serve to develop policy suggestions on population and development issues for policy and decision makers. These suggestions will be brought together in a policy kit and disseminated by a national seminar in 2006

Who are our partners?

Turkish Academy of Sciences

How will Turkey benefit?

Since the beginning of the Sub-Programme, the following studies were completed and published:

  • Population and Development Indicators: National and International Practices
  • Literature Review on Population and Development
  • Life Style Preferences of the Elderly and Their Relatives
  • Adolescents and Their Psychological Problems: A Case Study
  • Problems on Establishing the Qualities and Quantities of Migration
  • From Science to Policy: In Fields of Population and Development

The publications are available at UNFPA and TAS Offices.

In the long-term, the policy suggestions developed during the period of the Sub-Programme are expected to serve as a guide for policy makers to enable better planning for meeting the needs of the changing population structure of Turkey.
